This study examines external auditing in Egypt’s digital banking environment through a critical four-dimensional analytical framework. It analyses how the digital transformation of commercial banks reshapes external auditors’ responsibilities in relation to audit risk, electronic audit evidence, digital internal controls, and assurance services. The study is conceptual rather than empirical; it does not test statistical relationships or measure auditors’ perceptions. Instead, it adopts a structured critical review and conceptual analytical approach that synthesizes international academic and professional literature on digital banking, audit digitalisation, audit risk, cybersecurity, data analytics, internal controls, and technology-enabled assurance. This literature is integrated with Egyptian regulatory and institutional documents related to digital banks, non-cash payments, financial inclusion, electronic signatures, and personal data protection. The analysis shows that digital banking creates both audit opportunities and audit risks. While digital technologies may enhance audit efficiency, expand evidence coverage, and support datadriven procedures, they also increase auditors’ dependence on complex information systems, automated controls, cybersecurity arrangements, outsourced technology services, and electronically generated evidence. Based on this analysis. The study contributes to the auditing literature by linking international debates on audit digitalisation with Egypt’s regulatory environment and by offering a structured framework for understanding the changing responsibilities of external auditors in digital commercial banks. It also highlights practical implications for auditors, audit firms, regulators, professional bodies, and accounting education.
